Opposites Attract….Don’t They?

We’ve all seen it hundreds of times and always turn to our best friends and whisper Why is he with her? How does that relationship work? That will never last! Or will it? Let’s dig into this controversial topic; do opposites attract? In order to dig my teeth into this I looked at the most romantic and obvious long lasting relationships that society has. You know the ones I’m talking about, those relationships we strive to have as our own because they are all so honest and stay loyal to each other until the end. I’m obviously talking about celebrities! Realistically, we know that the chances of a celebrity couple making it in the long run are slim to none. We thought we had it with Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt, but then Angelina Jolie came along and killed that dream. Then there was Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, but rumours of their open marriage kind of ruined that happy thought. So instead, I decided to look at those surprising couples that you could never have imagined in a million years, and from those I looked which are actually still around and why.

Some of the top most unlikely couples I saw were: Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon, Hayden Panettiere and Wladimir Klitscho, Jessie James and Sandra Bullock, as well as Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher. From these mismatched pairs only 2 are still together, Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon along with Hayden Penettiere and Wladimir Klitscho.

Here’s a little back story for you; Mariah Carey is the queen of all divas and she is with a younger man, Nick Cannon, who checked out of being an actor/rapper years ago and lives his life as the host of the popular show America’s Got Talent. Hayden Panettiere is 24 years old and 5’2 while her now fiancée (with whom she’d broken up with in the past) is 37 and 6’6; quite an interesting difference.

So here’s my question to you guys: why does this work? For me this all comes down to experience; for example, I have a friend that lived with someone the complete opposite of him while away in university. He was a slob and she was a neat freak, he was social and she was an introvert, he slept through a couple lectures she attended every one, he lived a carefree life and she was very moody and sensitive. 2 guesses of what happened next, yep, they dated. Now did this only happen because of proximity or was it something about being around someone so different from you that you find him or her intriguing? Personally for me, I don’t know if I could do it. I’m a total neat freak and would lose my mind if my boyfriend was messy that it would be a deal breaker. So how can others accept this obvious flaw? Is it simpler than I think?

Pop culture certainly seems to think so. How often do you see couples in romantic comedies interact with hate or opposition throughout the entire film until the very end when, surprise, they realize that they’re fated to be together. The Ugly Truth, The Proposal, 10 Things I Hate About You, and Jerry Maguire just to name a few. I think it all comes down to curiosity. We are so fascinated with whatever is different from us that we get pulled towards it. I mean think about it, you’re always surrounded by the same type of people aka your friends, now enter this mysterious tall dark and handsome figure from the shadows. Are you going to tell me that you’re not interested in the least bit?

So, do opposites attract? Yes, I believe so. Will they last? Now that’s a whole other can of worms. I mean when I look at couples like Chelsea Handler and 50 Cent, I’m defiantly leaning towards a hard no they will not. But then I see Celine Dion and Rene Angelil and I’m more inclined to say that they can. I guess I’ll leave you guys with this, yes opposites attract, and they can, possibly, maybe last…I think.
