Wednesday September 26 was a very exciting day! We’d been invited to attend the media preview of a new Exhibit at DX: Lingerie Française, a retrospective covering over 100 years of glorious French lingerie. The French association PROMINCOR presents this luxurious history of French Lingerie, following stopovers in Paris, London, Shanghai, Dubai, Berlin and New York, from September 26 to October 13, 2013 here at our very own freshly reinvented Design Exchange. We recommend you too make time to attend. It is a great history lesson as well as a lot of fun!

We arrived there to find a very well organized media event and equally well put together displays. Welcomed with a glass of wine and some munchies accompanied by French inspired live music, we’ve been immediately transported to the seductive world of French Lingerie. The exhibit is aiming to portray the powerful influence lingerie products have had on society, starting with the corset in the nineteenth century up until the present day. Eleven seductive French lingerie brands, symbols of elegance and refinement, have pulled together their historical treasures in order to show the world their best. The entire Exhibit is a tribute to femininity and the power of seduction as reflected by lingerie.

The fun is amplified by moving images and pictures showing the chronology.

A life size hologram takes us through the history of lingerie, showing how the female silhouette, her body movements, and societal norms have been influenced and changed over time by lingerie development.

Walking through see-through museum like enclosures allows you to see the lingerie silhouettes projected amongst human figures, in a more than symbolic approach.

Our favourites ranged from a fifties Simone Perele long-line in navy blue lace to Lou’s late sixties “Tou Fou” bra, in a beautiful printed nylon with underwire and adjustable straps to a timeless animal print bra from not too long ago.

As a special treat, historian Catherine Ormen was on hand for a guided tour of the Exhibit, given the fact that her book “Lingerie Francaise” presents most of these garments in a comprehensive retrospective of French Lingerie with images by the renowned photographer Gilles Berquet.

The Exhibit runs at DX until October 13, awaiting your guest book comments!
