How To Spot Crazy

Quite possibly the most valuable lesson anyone can learn, yet it’s the hardest thing to master: how to spot crazy. We all get involved with people who we think are totally legit, only to find out that they’re a little whacked out. I’ve always said: I wish people wore a sign that outlined their crazy for you, but unfortunately it’s not that simple. Want to cut down on your emotional investment? Here are a few tips on how to know when to abort mission.

If they get too clingy too soon

We’re all guilty of it, and sometimes it’s not the worst thing in the entire world. But if clingy crosses over into possessive, get outta there! If they start imposing crazy rules, constantly need to know where you are or starts calling you their girlfriend/boyfriend before that conversation actually takes place, you may have some crazy on your hands.

If they badmouth their ex mercilessly

We all have our baggage, and we all have exes that we wish didn’t exist. It’s natural for someone to say something mean about someone to hurt us really badly (a cheater, perhaps?), however if you have just started seeing each other and you already know every unpleasant detail about their past relationships, it could mean one of two things: they’re still hung up on them, or they’re just a jerk. Or both. Later!

If they party just a little too hard

I know that I myself enjoy indulging in a vodka water (or 6?) as much as the next person, but if they’re drinking almost every night and it starts to affect your relationship, it could be a problem. If they start flaking on plans, starting pointless fights or flirting uncontrollably with other people while they’re drunk, this is likely going to become a mess you don’t want to clean up.

If they subtweet like it’s their job

Sometimes it’s really satisfying to take a tiny jab at someone via the internet, but if you get in a fight and suddenly their Facebook looks like a 16 year old girl’s diary, you may need to pull the plug. You don’t want to know that they take every argument way too seriously, but you also may not be interested in having every fight broadcasted for the world to see. Next!

If they’re beyond jealous

It’s natural to get a teensy bit jealous when the object of your affection is talking to or hanging out with people you view as a threat, but it’s also crucial to know the difference between an actual threat, or a problem you’re making up in your head. If they bump into you while you’re out with your cousin and jump to an insane conclusion, run in the opposite direction and never look back.
